Biopharma research and development marketplace, Scientist.com announces the formation of its inaugural Scientist.com STEM Research NIL Award.
The goal of the award program is to provide STEM undergrads conducting research within an academic laboratory the opportunity to be compensated for their work much like collegiate athletes are now about to be compensated for use of their name, image, and likeness under the NCAA’s 2021 NIL policy.
The Scientist.com NIL Award sets aside $50,000 that will be divided among 10 deserving junior or senior undergraduate research students based on several eligibility requirements, including a confirmed 2023 laboratory research position.
In a released statement from Scientist.com, the organization’s president and COO, Dan Kagan, PhD, says, “There are at least 10 US universities that bring in over $100 million in athletic revenue per year, so the NIL rule makes sense. We started the STEM NIL Award in recognition of the fact that there are at least 20 US universities that generate over $1 billion in research revenue annually, but undergraduates and graduate STEM students often are not paid for their research.”
